What to Expect

Our dentists will remove the damaged nerve before filling or hermetically sealing the canal. This process usually takes more than one visit. As your tooth will be weaker after the procedure than before, it’s essential to protect the biting surface of the tooth. In some cases, a large filling may be sufficient, but we usually need to use a more durable material like porcelain or metals by using crowns or inlays.

Our Comprehensive Approach

Many patients who come to us for emergency care are suffering severe toothache. We’ll make a careful diagnosis and discuss your options. If you wish to retain the tooth, we may be able to begin treatment that same day, depending on your situation.

We use a local anaesthetic and isolate the tooth with rubber dam to keep saliva and bacteria from entering. During this first appointment, the dentist will remove the nerve, using fine instruments and a medicament to soothe the tooth and surrounding tissues.

The next visit is to thoroughly clean out all roots of the infected tooth. Usually the next appointment is to complete the root canal treatment. However, if the infection was severe, we may need a third appointment to check on it before putting the final filling in.

Once you begin root canal treatment, it’s essential to continue with treatment until completion, to avoid reinfection and severe pain.

FAQ

Unfortunately, a hyper-inflamed tooth may not fully respond to anaesthesia. Our highly trained dentists are usually able to resolve any pain quickly.

How long will it take?

The length of the appointment depends on which tooth it is and the unique structure and complexity and condition of that tooth.
